IRVINE, Calif., Jan 10, 2006 -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in wired and wireless broadband communications semiconductors, today announced that it is a founding member of the Ethernet Alliance, an industry group dedicated to the continued success and expansion of Ethernet technology. Broadcom will play a key role in helping the Ethernet Alliance fulfill its mission of helping companies increase acceptance of and reduce time-to-market for products based on existing and emerging Ethernet technologies.
In addition to Broadcom, founding members of the Ethernet Alliance include 3Com, ADC, Agere Systems, AMCC, Aquantia, Force10 Networks, Foundry Networks, Intel, Lawrence Berkeley Labs, Pioneer Corporation, Quake Technologies, Samsung, Sun Microsystems, Tehuti Networks, Tyco Electronics, The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL), and Xilinx.
Unlike past alliances that have supported single IEEE 802 Ethernet projects, the Ethernet Alliance will exist for as long as it remains relevant to Ethernet technology. It will support IEEE 802 Ethernet projects:
* By speeding acceptance of new Ethernet markets and time-to-market for new technologies;
* By cultivating efforts to define and develop new Ethernet technologies;
* Through educating Ethernet users on their choices and implementations for various applications.
Moreover, the Ethernet Alliance removes the barrier of start-up and organizational issues that surround individually dedicated efforts, saving both time and money.
"Broadcom takes pride in being a founding member of the Ethernet Alliance," said Ford Tamer, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Networking Infrastructure Group. "As a global leader in Ethernet semiconductors, Broadcom is committed to continuing to drive pervasive Ethernet technology in the home and business networks. We look forward to working closely with the Ethernet Alliance and all of the members of the alliance to come up with highly integrated, innovative and standardized Ethernet semiconductor solutions to meet and exceed our customers' increasing demand for more bandwidth, mobility, security and ease of deployment."
"The Ethernet Alliance is pleased to have Broadcom as one of our founders," said Brad Booth, president, Ethernet Alliance. "Broadcom has grown significantly from its beginning as a start-up to becoming a major player in the IEEE 802 Ethernet market, and it is good to see them take a leadership role in the formation of the Ethernet Alliance."
"The founding members of the Ethernet Alliance have played important roles in supporting Ethernet standards and advancements, and together they provide a strong foundation for the Alliance," said Cindy Borovick, program director, Datacenter Networks program, IDC. "The Ethernet Alliance promises to be a cohesive voice for the Ethernet industry."
